You may have heard before that self-discipline is important. I believe so too.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let me start with a disclaimer. This article doesn\u2019t say that it\u2019s not important at all.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But self-discipline\u00a0<\/span>may be overrated<\/span>.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let me explain with a story.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Ponyo<\/span>\u00a0was the most well-known farmer in his town. He was a rice farmer. He loved to farm. He\u2019s working diligently every day and he\u2019s able to feed his family because of it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He owns the farm and he manage it well. He loves to study the weather, he loves to plow the land, he loves planting seeds. He loves what he\u2019s doing. He also loves his rice!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Each month, the farmers in this town holds a convention. They meet to discuss recent discoveries\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>new methods<\/span>. A<\/span>nd\u00a0<\/span>even\u00a0<\/span>fertilizer formulas to keep their farms running well.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since\u00a0<\/span>Ponyo<\/span>\u00a0is the most successful of them all,\u00a0<\/span>everyone\u00a0<\/span>listens to him. They admire how\u00a0Ponyo\u2019s\u00a0farm is running very well.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the farmers look up to\u00a0<\/span>Ponyo<\/span>\u00a0so much, his adoration comes with envy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He wants to know everything that\u00a0<\/span>Ponyo<\/span>\u00a0knows when it comes to farming. His name is Bacchus.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On another convention held by the farmers at the town square,\u00a0<\/span>Ponyo<\/span>\u00a0shared a new discovery. A formula that can change the world of farming.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bacchus wanted to ask\u00a0<\/span>Ponyo<\/span>\u00a0what this formula was. But he\u2019s afraid Ponyo won\u2019t share the whole thing as he always does.\u00a0<\/span>So<\/span>\u00a0Bacchus took the matter into his own hands.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One night after the convention, he stole the formula from\u00a0<\/span>Ponyo\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0farm.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ponyo<\/span>\u00a0wasn\u2019t able to recreate the formula and the discovery ended up on Bacchus\u2019s hands.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bacchus went ahead and applied what he recently discovered.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Months went by and his farm went from good to great. Other farmers noticed his success. And Bacchus loved the attention and admiration.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even\u00a0<\/span>Ponyo<\/span>\u00a0is shaking Bacchus’s hands congratulating him. And this bothered him. Even when it was\u00a0<\/span>Ponyo\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0discovery, why does\u00a0<\/span>Ponyo<\/span>\u00a0always the happier guy? He always seemed so calm and contented.\u00a0<\/span>Ponyo<\/span>\u00a0was still the most respected. Why?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Agitated, Bacchus used his envy to work harder and fan the flames. He decided he\u2019ll be self-disciplined. He only ate once a day. He slept in his barn. He woke up early. All to be time efficient and to work several hours a day.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He was tired. But he\u2019s proud of his hard work.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Years went by and Bacchus became the wealthiest farmer in his town. He surpassed\u00a0<\/span>Ponyo<\/span>\u00a0when it comes to wealth, produce, and land.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His co-farmers\u00a0<\/span>admire<\/span>\u00a0him for that.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even\u00a0Ponyo…<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And it still bothers him. How can\u00a0<\/span>Ponyo<\/span>\u00a0be this\u00a0<\/span>happy<\/span><\/i>? How is he so contented?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bacchus have surpassed him in so many ways as a farmer, and\u00a0<\/span>Ponyo<\/span>\u00a0is still congratulating him. While Bacchus remains miserable on the inside. What\u2019s missing?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bacchus\u2019s insecurity and\u00a0<\/span>Ponyo\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0contentment both went on and on until the day they die.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the gate of heavens, they still discuss discoveries about farming, they love to talk about it. And when the great one called them, the great one said:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPonyo, come here, have a sit, rest. Well done, son.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And then the great one looked over Bacchus and said, \u201cAnything bothering you?\u201d Bacchus\u00a0<\/span>answed<\/span>, \u201cYes, how come you have asked him to sit beside you and not me? I am wealthier, I am more powerful, I produced more rice, and I\u2019m more famous?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWell, the answer is simple, dear Bacchus,\u201d replied the great one, \u201cyou were meant to be a boxer, and not a rice farmer. Your work is not yet done, off you go.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And the great one sent Bacchus down for another go.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lesson?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

One of the most important things in life is finding out what you love to do.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And it isn\u2019t that simple. What you love to do may sometimes differ from what you want to do and what you need to do.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You may want to just lie down on your couch and watch Netflix. But that doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019ve figured out what you love to do.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It can be challenging to know what you really love to do.\u00a0So\u00a0<\/span>here are some guide questions to hopefully get you the answer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

  1. What do you like to do for fun?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. What would you do even if you won\u2019t be rewarded for it?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. If you won a really big lottery, and won\u2019t ever have money problems for the rest of your life… how would you spend the rest of your life?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. No matter where you are, whether you\u2019re in a plane or you\u2019re countryside… Whether you\u2019re in a rich first world country or in a third world country… What do you see yourself doing?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. What activity do you find yourself always going back to throughout your life?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. What is it that you can\u2019t see yourself without?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Few more notes…<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

    I\u2019m not saying that if you\u2019re going to do what you love, it\u2019s going to be easy. It can be challenging, in can be difficult. But here\u2019s what you can count on…<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    You won\u2019t find yourself doing the \u2018hard work\u2019. You won\u2019t find yourself dreading what you do. Self-discipline will come naturally. Like a river carving its own banks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    You can be like Bacchus, devote and discipline yourself and you\u2019ll achieve what you think you need. Or be like\u00a0Ponyo, be passionate doing what you love, and do what the passion requires from you. One would lead to contentment, another to frustrations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
