Let me start this article by saying this…<\/p>\n

Happiness is\u00a0not<\/strong>\u00a0that\u00a0happy<\/em>\u00a0feeling you get every time you\u2019re laughing so hard it makes your tummy ache.<\/p>\n

It is only a\u00a0part<\/strong>\u00a0of that, and it is\u00a0more\u00a0<\/strong>than that.<\/p>\n

Before I get to what it\u00a0is,\u00a0<\/em>let me first show you what it is not:<\/p>\n

Being happy does not mean you won\u2019t suffer anymore.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Think of someone you know that is happy and successful.<\/p>\n

Do you think that person is not experiencing any suffering anymore?<\/p>\n

He\u2019s got all this money, he\u2019s got all these connections and all these resources. He can solve his problems easily. Right?<\/p>\n

Well, maybe. Maybe he can solve his problems easier than what is required out of us. But that doesn\u2019t mean he\u2019s not experiencing suffering anymore.<\/p>\n

Being happy does not mean you always have that\u00a0<\/strong>joyful<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0feeling.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Imagine a day full of laughter, 100% of the time,\u00a0100% of the time<\/strong>. Fun, right?<\/p>\n

But do you think this is even possible? Your mind will bog you down with stress no matter how good your day is.<\/p>\n

Being happy does not mean you turn your back on your problems.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

To follow up on my first point, running away won\u2019t make you happy. It will just make the problems worse.<\/p>\n

Now that you know what happiness is not, then what is it?<\/p>\n

Life is suffering. You might have heard that phrase before. It\u2019s from Buddhist teaching. And it\u2019s true. I\u2019m not telling you this to break your rose-colored glasses and be an all-time pessimist.<\/p>\n

Happiness is\u00a0finding something worthy to suffer for<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Doesn\u2019t sound right? Let me rephrase\u2026<\/p>\n

Happiness is about\u00a0finding and sticking to your WHY.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now, you\u2019ve heard that before, I assume.<\/p>\n

Let me tell you a story about Johnson\u2026<\/p>\n

He\u2019s a great guy, winning small tennis competitions here and there. But when I say winning, I mean he gets the podium, but he just can\u2019t get the gold medal.<\/p>\n

And he\u2019s always frustrated about that. It saps out his happiness. He trains, he always does.<\/p>\n

But he trains in frustration, anger, jealousy, and anxiety.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s not emotionally healthy. And it\u2019s because he thinks of happiness the other way around.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf only I can get that gold, if only I can stand in the first place, then I\u2019ll be happy.\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Now\u00a0that<\/strong>\u00a0will bring unhappiness to him, and everyone who thinks the same way.<\/p>\n

Drop your\u00a0IBHW<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0IO\u00a0<\/strong>mindset.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll be happy when\u2026\u00a0<\/strong>or\u00a0If only\u00a0<\/strong>this and that\u2026 then I\u2019ll be happy.<\/p>\n

Take a complete U-turn and realize that you can be happy now.<\/p>\n

When I told that to Johnson, it was a hard pill to swallow. His mind came up with reasons to protect him from the unknown.<\/p>\n

He was baffled,\u00a0\u201chow?\u201d.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

But soon he realized the answer. He took his pain and his suffering and decided that it\u2019s worth it. Because he loves tennis. He loves training, he loves competing.<\/p>\n

Now, he still gets 2nd place. He only won the gold twice since the last we talked. But he\u2019s happy.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s still suffering and still in pain while he\u2019s training. But that suffering and pain are just pushing him to train harder and train smarter. That\u2019s why he got the gold twice.<\/p>\n

And I know he\u2019ll keep working on it as long as it\u2019s rooted in his values that he loves tennis\u00a0that much.<\/strong>\u00a0That he can endure the suffering, the pain, and push forward.<\/p>\n

He still gets heartbroken whenever he loses a match\u2026<\/p>\n

He still feels the feeling he should feel, sadness, pain, and a little bit of grief. But he gets over that. And while he\u2019s in that stage, he knows he will get over that. And he does.<\/p>\n

This might seem like a boring cycle for someone like us because we might not love tennis as much as Johnson does.<\/p>\n

But this cycle of suffering, accomplishment, and fulfillment means happiness to him.<\/p>\n

Happiness is also tied into fulfillment by the way. And fulfillment will only come if you\u2019re working for something worth it. Even if it entails suffering, pain, and hurdles along the way.<\/p>\n

You won\u2019t be able to eradicate your problems. You can\u2019t live pain-free. But you can be happy.<\/p>\n

In fact, happiness is easy.<\/p>\n
