Learning from Kids<\/h2>\n

We often hear parenting stories from our friends, our family, and even the people in the next table across from us in a coffee shop.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not unheard of to hear tips on how to get your toddler to stop biting their nails, how to get them to nap after eating, how to get them to do chores around the house, etc.<\/p>\n

As our kids get older, we are put in a position to offer them sage advice on dating, mending a broken heart, choosing friends, and even on selecting a course in college.<\/h1>\n

At every stage of their childhood, we see ourselves as the designated teachers. But we sometimes don\u2019t realize that we learn valuable lessons from them too.<\/p>\n

Here are crumbs of wisdom from our little nuggets:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The now<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For kids, there is no tomorrow, no next week for going back to jungle gym, no next year for their next birthday. There is only now, and that\u2019s what matters, that\u2019s when they want it, that\u2019s just how it is.<\/p>\n

While we all need to learn how to delay gratification, there is much to be learned in how kids don\u2019t settle for \u2018later\u2019.<\/p>\n

They remind us that sometimes wanting something now and getting it can be better than saving it for later and being disappointed.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s always a beauty in learning to enjoy the present moment, especially for adults who are always looking to the future.<\/p>\n

No means no<\/strong><\/h3>\n

No matter who you are, whether you\u2019re the President of Google, of the United States of America, or whoever you are, when your child says they don\u2019t wanna, they don\u2019t wanna (though it doesn\u2019t always mean they\u2019re off the hook).<\/p>\n

They learn to assert themselves even as toddlers learning to say no to naps, to veggies, and to anything that\u2019s remotely good for them.<\/p>\n

But hey, they know how to say no. Do you?<\/p>\n

Unlike us, kids aren\u2019t too inclined to please everybody.<\/p>\n

If anything, they\u2019re out to test their limits. So the next time you really don\u2019t want to do something and it will take valuable time out of you, get in touch with the child within and just say no.<\/p>\n

\u201cHelp!\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

One of the hardest things to say and do is to ask for help from anyone. At least for some people, that\u2019s the case.<\/p>\n

At a certain age, when kids start to realize they\u2019re capable of doing things by themselves like holding up a bottle, picking up a toy, or feeding themselves, they don\u2019t want you to extend any help to them.<\/p>\n

They want to do things by themselves. Not because of pride, but because they get a sense of independence and it feels good to them.<\/p>\n

Now, if they see that the snack they want is way up on the refrigerator or that they really can\u2019t solve their homework, they realize that they need help and ask you for it without hesitation.<\/p>\n

The same goes for us adults.<\/p>\n

When we realize the things we can do for ourselves, it\u2019s quite liberating. But there will come a time we\u2019ll come across a few things that we can\u2019t do ourselves.<\/p>\n

Why is it that it takes more effort for us to ask the help we need?<\/p>\n

Remember, we\u2019re not out to do things by ourselves for pride, to prove something, or to compete with everybody else. We do it because we can, we\u2019re independent, but it doesn\u2019t mean we don\u2019t need others entirely.<\/p>\n

Keep trying<\/strong><\/h3>\n

We often tell kids that it doesn\u2019t matter if they fail, in class, at varsity tryouts, or at making friends. They will have another shot at it and they should keep an open mind to try.<\/p>\n

Well, when adults are concerned, a lot of us get discouraged more easily.<\/p>\n

Egos are bruised, pride gets too hard to swallow, and the embarrassment just keeps getting harder to live down.<\/p>\n

The thing is, it doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019re an adult and you still keep making mistakes.<\/p>\n

It never stops.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no menopause or biological deadlines for mistakes nor is there one for improvement.<\/p>\n

Choose to be better. Always.<\/p>\n
