7 Ways to Combat the Blues

No one is immune to the ways the world throws curve balls at us. Even the situations we expect to be bad can surprise us by being worse than we anticipated.

Having the blues is just a fact of life.

Luckily, there are ways to combat the blues when they come a-knockin’ on your door.

Chocolate

I think this needs very little explanation as the word just simply excites! Chocolate is known to serve as an instant pick me up for those who feel downtrodden.

Grab a piece of chocolate from the kitchen or pass by your local grocery store for an emergency pack to put in your bag.

It never hurts to be ready!

Movie Marathon

Everyone has their own lineup of films that help them get through tough times. Usually, it’s recommended that you have a list of funny movies and feel good ones in queue, but it’s also actually quite helpful to put in a few dramas, a few tearjerkers in the mix.

Sad movies or those that pull on the heartstrings have a cathartic effect; purging you of your frustrations and making you feel like someone is going through the same thing or at least something as difficult as you are.

Drive

Know how to drive? Then you also know that it can be highly therapeutic, even in a traffic jam.

You don’t need to be in a top-down to feel free driving along the highway or the busy streets of your city or neighborhood.

If you don’t have a car, take public transport! It can be quite an adventure to just take the time to hop on a bus not having a destination and just see the different types of people getting on and off.

Sometimes observing strangers can give you a different perspective on your life. Even if you don’t know their stories, you can sometimes figure out portions of it.

Walk

If you prefer a more ‘analog’ way of travel, do it on foot. Walking is good on different levels.

Not only does it give you a bit of exercise, but it also serves to clear your head. Physical activity makes you feel like you’re actually doing something to rid yourself of the bad jujus plaguing your head or your heart.

When you walk off your emotions, you burn calories along the way. It sounds like a win-win.

Good, Healthy Meal

A lot of things can be solved over a good meal, and hopefully a good conversation among friends while having it.

I’m not talking about comfort food that’s greasy and will leave you with regret after your binge session.

As you get older, you’ll learn that having a healthy meal does more for your soul (and body) than a bad ever will. So you start choosing the salad over the fries and other healthier options.

Find recipes online and prepare your food with friends to make it even more fun and therapeutic!

Haircut

A simple trip to the salon or the barber could do wonders for your mood.

It’s quite a cliché to get a haircut when you’re feeling down or when your heart has been broken, but it’s a cliché for a reason and that’s because it works!

There’s something about a positive change in your appearance that just lifts up your mood instantly.

Dress up

In line with the concept of looking good, you might as well dress up. When you’re dressed better than most days, it can add an extra skip in your step. You’ll feel more confident as you strut down in your power suit, ready to take on challenges and look good doing it.

The compliments you’ll get also won’t hurt to brush your ego a little bit and perk up your day.

Sometimes all it really takes is a nudge towards the right direction to help you when you lose your way.

These little pick me ups serve as those nudges. It’s up to you to decide to stay on that path.
