Frustration: The Dream Thief
People are stressed by many things on a daily basis.
The topics surrounding family, finances, and future are all triggers for people’s frustration.
Thoughts about how to make ends meet, how to be there for your family while working, and what investments you can make at this point in your life can all be mind-numbing.
When this sort of paralysis hits you, you can take one of two paths.
Either you use this frustration as a viewfinder to see a different perspective on things and find a way to make yourself feel better, or you can let it consume you to the point of non-productivity and downward spiral.
Of course the former is the better option, but what can we do to help ourselves take this route?
IMAGINE
If what’s frustrating you is something that hasn’t happened yet, then you need to bring yourself back to the present to get a real grasp of the situation.
When your mind is preempting something problematic in the future, it tends to lose sight of the solutions they can put into place at this moment to be able to prevent that future from happening.
Focus on what you can do where you are now.
Close your eyes and imagine yourself time traveling back to where you are right this moment and when you open them, see how the things around you can help make your situation better.
The same principle can apply to if what’s upsetting you is the present.
Visualize a future free from the entanglements of the moment. When you have that picture in your head, time travel back to where you are now and see what elements you can change to get to that picture in your head.
APPRECIATE
When you’re stressing about the things in your life that are missing, you tend to sound bitter and resentful of others’ successes. This will not make you popular among your peers or your friends.
Instead, try to be genuinely happy for the people around you for getting to where they are.
Try to see them as allies in helping you achieve the same thing rather than competitors getting ahead of you in the game of life.
We all have different paths to take. Some are really meant to make it to the top sooner or faster.
Think of yourself as a work in progress.
Your choices don’t have to be limited to being the turtle or the hare.
Instead of longing for what you don’t have, appreciate that you don’t have them, or at least not yet.
For example, you want to travel. Since you don’t have the means to do so right now, think of it as something to look forward to when you’ve found a worthy travel companion.
Make it into a challenge of sorts for yourself, something to aspire for.
FOCUS
Don’t let your frustrations spiral out of control.
Your mind is strong and is capable of directing itself towards the better cause.
Your dreams and aspirations are all within reach. It is you who sets your own boundaries and limitations. Frustration is a fuel—what it fuels in you is up to you.
Let your emotions die down before you make any decisions. Remember, never make permanent decisions based on temporary feelings.
Use logic to regain your focus.
