7 Small Habits that Can Greatly Improve Your Life
Our habits make us. No matter how small, what we do can affect us.
Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”
If you want to improve your life, take a look at your habits. Are they positive? Or do they bring you down?
Here are seven habits you can try if you want to make a positive change in your life.
1. Start Your Day Right
Develop a good morning routine, one that can put you in the right mindset for the rest of the day.
You can start off by making your bed. Do morning stretches or morning yoga. Make sure that you have a good breakfast. Allow yourself enough time to sit down and eat.
If you find that you do not have enough time to cook every morning, look for alternatives. Prepping the week’s meals over the weekend may help.
2. Have a Grateful Mindset
Get into the habit of gratefulness; list down three things that you are grateful for everyday.
It may seem silly at the start. But, listing down three things, even small things, can help you feel more content and happy. It can be as simple as being grateful for the nice weather or for a good breakfast.
An alternative is listing down three positive things that happened to you during the day. You can do this before bed.
It is especially helpful if you find yourself tossing and turning in bed at night. Ending the day on a positive can help you rest easier.
Just like the things to be grateful for, it doesn’t have to be big things. A positive thing can be as simple as say, your usually grumpy doorman smiled at you today. Or that you managed to catch your train home on time.
3. Try Saying ‘Thank You’ Instead of ‘Sorry’
This won’t apply to every situation, but whenever you can, try swapping ‘Thank You’ for ‘Sorry’, but do it genuinely.
For example, instead of saying ‘Sorry, I took up so much of your time’. Say, ‘Thank you for spending time with me.’ Another example, instead of saying ‘Sorry, I’m late’ say, ‘Thank you for waiting’.
It will take some teething because many of us are so used to apologizing on autopilot. Try and make a conscious effort and find a way to say ‘Thanks’ instead of apologizing. Oftentimes, there isn’t even a need to apologize.
4. Learn Something New Every day
Read a quick article on a topic you have never read about before. Or watch a TED Talk. You can also scour YouTube for short documentaries or watch a tutorial.
If you want to stay away from screens pick up a magazine or newspaper instead.
You do not have to spend a lot of time on this. It can be as short as 10 or 15 minutes.
However, if you want to learn about something that needs deeper study, do so. Just break it down into manageable chunks so that it won’t affect your other activities.
Another thing you can do is to try and learn 3 to 5 new words in a foreign language every day. Who knows, it may come in handy.
Learning something new helps us feel better about ourselves. It helps you become a more well-rounded person.
5. Eat Away From Your Desk
Just like breakfast, you need to take time to eat. A short 30 min break away from your desk and work can help you recharge.
The break from work will also help avoid burnout and help make the rest of your day easier. You can also use the time to socialize with work friends.
It can also help you eat healthier. Instead of just gobbling down food, focusing on the task of eating. Being mindful of how you eat and what you are eating can help you feel fuller while eating less.
6. The 3-Minute Rule
It’s easy to get into the habit of putting things off. To get out of that habit try the 3 Minute Rule. If there is something that can be done in three minutes or less, do it now. Don’t put it off.
If your sink needs wiping down, do it right away. If the dishwasher needs loading, do that too. If your trash can needs emptying, do it now. Do you get the picture?
7. Journal
If you ever had a diary growing up, then you have some idea of how journaling can help. It’s a form of debriefing at the end of the day.
You can also journal during or after a stressful situation. Journaling can have the same effect of venting to a close friend. It helps you let out negative feelings.
Aside from that, a journal can also help you with planning. And it can be a good way to keep track of the events in your life.
It can seem like a lot to do, but these little changes can help you improve as an individual and who doesn’t want that?
Aside from these seven small habits, you can also attract everything you’ve ever desired without working endless hours or putting your life on hold.
