Why You Should Take a Break

There’s always something happening in your life. Work during the weekday, parties at the weekend, market on Sundays, walking your dog, and the list never ends.

Most people nowadays don’t just have one job, but they’re probably working 2-3 aside from their day job.

We’re taking multitasking to a whole different level.

We’re coming up with more and more ways to combine our activities and sometimes it borders on unsafe and inefficient masking as the opposite.

Our means to stay connected online is not doing us all that good because we refuse to turn anything off, meaning we never really experience downtime.

When people do manage to find time in between their busy schedules, they’re somehow still online somewhere.

In this day and age, we have to be more conscious about drawing the line. We cannot remain comfortable blurring lines between work and play, or work and personal life, or personal life and cyber life.

What suffers from our laissez-faire attitude is our relationships–our relationship with our self and our relationship with others.

Sometimes we become absentminded and just do things automatically because it’s a routine or it’s an instinct. When we’re driving to work, we feel like we can afford to text or look up at the billboards because our hands and our feet already know what they’re doing.

So there are times when we get to our destination but we don’t really know the events that happened to get there because we’re focused on the distractions along the way.

This kind of absentmindedness could turn fatal very quickly. This is one of those instances of multitasking that borders on safety issues. That’s just unacceptable.

What you need to develop is the need to disconnect. You need to know and feel that you need to take breaks in between. It’s not something that comes naturally anymore for everyone.

The evolution of technology and the insistence to stay connected has shifted the paradigm. Life isn’t as simple as it used to be, but actually it should be. With all the things we’re coming up with on how to stay connected and to work more freely, it’s ironic that it actually ties us up more.

We need to re-evaluate priorities and work around those. We also need to realize that in order to function correctly on a daily basis, we need rest. Physical and mental rests should be taken to ensure that we are operating in tip-top shape.

It’s necessary to take breaks because we need to spend time with loved ones, we need to spend time with ourselves, to recuperate, to recharge, to re-align.

There are many components to a human’s functionality and all of them need to be addressed with the same importance because they all serve the whole. If we become weary in any aspect, all others will follow suit and eventually fall down.

So if you want to keep working, if you want to keep doing what you’re doing, the key is to stop doing it intermittently. Take breaks because it’s essential to your life. It gives you the opportunity to really see what your life is like, to assess what you need and what you want.

Take breaks because you deserve it.
