How To Be Good
Being a good person is such a broad term, but in its broadness sits an understanding that good people do certain things that make them noticeable as such.
Goodness is its own benefit. When you’re good, you put out the right energy. Your positivity will snowball into even better things for you and for others.
Here are a few tips on how to be good.
Love yourself
The first step to being good is to know yourself completely. Be aware of every nook and cranny in your personality and your character.
The only way you can learn to love yourself is to expose everything about you and accept what you see, especially your flaws.
If you love yourself, you’ll be more inclined to share that feeling of love with everybody else. It will show in the things you do for them, in the things you say, and the way you live your life.
Ask yourself what it means to be good for you
Because people define goodness differently, you need to identify what constitutes a good person for you.
List down the traits, the actions, and the guiding principles that appeal to your senses as goodness and start from there.
Step two is trying to live by your own standards. Sounds easy enough, but so many factors can sway you from living your own definition of goodness.
Don’t be too hard on yourself though if you fail to live by every code and conduct.
Just because you failed once, twice, or even a few times doesn’t mean you’re a bad person.
As long as you’re still trying on a daily basis, you’re still on the path.
Look up to someone
When it gets tough to stick by your own rules, it’s good to have another moral compass to look to and to pattern your actions against.
This isn’t to say that you should copy everything they do. Having a role model just helps guide you when you feel lost in your own thoughts.
When you’re in a tough situation and you don’t know what to do, you can ask yourself ‘What would my role model do?’
Have goals
It’s important that you have a list of the things you want to accomplish, be it in your career, in your family life, in your relationships.
Having a set of goals keeps you on the right track.
Discipline helps you to choose the good rather than what is bad.
If you have the discipline to achieve your goals, it means you have the patience to wait for things to happen instead of choosing what is easy.
This comes handy when you’re in a bind. Let’s say you’re strapped for cash.
An undisciplined person will resort to doing things to get fast cash, like steal. But a good person, a disciplined person, is patient and will work for the money they need.
And it’s not just about having goals. It’s about having the right ones.
Help people
People who volunteer their time, money, or whatever it is they can offer, are good people. Keep in mind that being good is having the heart to help.
It doesn’t matter how you help or who.
You can be kind to strangers or kind to your friends and family.
Kindness is either innate or acquired. It’s a habit you keep practicing to strengthen it.
Sometimes you help people without knowing you are just by being yourself.
A kind word or gesture could mean the world to someone. Even doing your job well can be a form of help.
Sharing your talent with the world can be considered helping out too.
Being generous and kind takes a lot of forms. Don’t confine yourself to the traditional idea of what it means to help people.
It’s all about making the world a better place in any capacity you can.
You don’t need to perform superhuman feats. Most of the time, you just need to be human in the best way possible.
