How to Ditch Your Demons

We all have them. It’s that relentless voice in our head whispering our deepest, dirtiest secrets, worst insecurities, and amplifying our greatest fears tenfold. It knows exactly when to creep into our mind and kick us down.

When we’re at our weakest and most vulernable, those apocalytpic thoughts flood in, drowning us in a sea of hopelessness and despair.

Our inner demons are cruel like that.

They taunt us and infect our mind with a crippling sense of self-doubt. They poison our head with endless what-ifs and project the worst-case scenario in our mind’s eye, causing us to act out of fear and desperation.

If you’re struggling with this, you probably wish those inner demons would just leave you alone and give you some peace of mind.

But as you most likely know, life doesn’t play fair and we don’t always get what we want. Unless of course, you make a conscious effort to push back those insidious thoughts and reclaim that space in your head they’ve been living in.

Here are a few ways you can pull the rug from under those inner demons and keep them from invading your mind:

#1. Stop running

When it comes to confronting those nagging thoughts, the first mistake is trying to outrun them. You can only keep those inner demons at bay for so long – eventually, they will catch up to you one way or another.

And if you keep running away from them, they’ll always give chase. But if you turn around, dig in your heels and find the courage to face your inner demons, this will give you the leverage to deal with them.

Running away from scary thoughts or uncomfortable situations keeps you in denial and only feeds your irrational fear of them. The cycle of pushing those fears in the back of your mind and having them resurface every now and then can make you feel paralyzed and powerless.

Remember – you are the biggest monster under your bed, so the sooner you break that cycle, the less power those demons have over you. Embrace the discomfort and use the anger you’re feeling to give you the push you need to fight back. Those emotions exist for a reason, and that’s to fuel your drive to succeed.

#2. Be comfortable on your own

Even when you’re with your partner or with your family or friends, the life you lead is still your own.

No matter what group you belong to, you are first and foremost an individual with your own thoughts, opinions and beliefs. Don’t be afraid of that.

Learn to distance yourself if needed. There’s nothing shameful or embarrassing about needing some time for yourself for whatever reason.

It doesn’t mean you’re lonely or alone, nor will it make you weak. It just means you’re taking the time off to rediscover yourself, get some perspective, do some soul-searching, regain your bearings, recharge your batteries, and to find your center again.

Doing all of this will help you get back on the right track and function properly on a daily basis.

Investing some time in your personal growth and development is a productive exercise.

So, if you feel the need to go off and do your own thing for a bit, go ahead and take that sabbatical.

#3. Listen to your gut instinct

The problem with us sometimes is that we doubt the first thought that comes to us. We question it with logic and find excuses to dismiss those thoughts.

But not all things can be rationalized and it can even be harmful in some ways.

When ideas come to us, we need to cling to the excitement of it and use that creative energy of ours to make those abstract concepts into something tangible and concrete. Don’t let the fear of “what could go wrong” immediately shoot down your ideas before you’ve had a chance to flesh them out and see how far they can go.

You can evaluate the pros and cons, and hem and haw all you want. At some point however, you’ll need to set that mental list aside, go with the flow and take that leap of faith.

You’ll never know what will actually happen until you take the first step to set things in motion. Once you’ve crossed over from planning to execution, you’ll learn from your experiences as well as your mistakes.

That said, make an active effort to stop your demons from feeding those initial hesitations in your head. Otherwise, you’ll believe the lies and never venture out of your comfort zone.

Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do, regardless of what your mind tells you. You could end up thankful or disappointed, but the important thing is that you followed your instinct. Learn the lesson for later.

#4. Believe in your power

The greatest weapon to silence your inner demons is the faith you have in yourself. Once you truly believe that you are strong and that you have the ability to defeat the toughest opponent, you will never give in to self-doubt again.

That doesn’t mean they’ll stop trying to get the best of you, but it does mean you’ll always be there to meet those inner demons and push them back every step of the way. That’s the difference between being successful and settling for mediocrity.

It’s not easy at first to summon the courage to actually do something to better yourself. But once you get used to the habit of powering through the mental roadblocks your inner demons have placed in your path, tapping into your inner strength will become easier over time.

It takes months or even years to master yourself and to know how to use both your strengths and weaknesses to overcome hurdles, but it CAN be done. Just keep in mind that your daily efforts have a cumulative effect, and the sum of your actions will build up as time goes by.

#5. Success, One Day at a Time

Peace of mind is not really about silencing your inner demons completely. It’s knowing what to take in, what you need to listen to so you can learn from it. It’s your ability to transform the worst and most destructive thoughts about yourself into something constructive.

One of the best investments you can make is laying down a solid foundation of self-confidence so you’ll never be rattled when those inner demons come knocking. Using these tips you just went through, you can start doing that today and head in the right direction.

Aside from managing your inner demons however, one of the other things you can do is to know yourself better. Most of us take this for granted, but when it comes down to it, a lot of people have a vague idea of their true strengths and weaknesses.
