Stop Trying to be Happy and Just Be
“All I want is to be happy.” This sentiment has been echoed by nearly everyone throughout time.
These days you see it on your social media feeds, on TV, in the movies, in songs and practically everywhere. Whether it’s stated or implied, it’s there.
The pursuit of happiness is pervasive and it’s something that’s hard to escape.
But, is it good for us? Should we be in constant search for happiness or are we just deceiving ourselves?
What is Happiness?
To put it simply, Happiness is the feeling of being happy, but it is more complicated than that.
When you say, ‘I want to be happy’, what you are really looking for is a combination of how happy you are on a day to day basis and about how satisfied you are with your life.
Is it Possible to be Happy all the Time?
Generally speaking, yes, you can be happy all the time. But, if you mean that you want to be happy every single minute of every day, never having to experience any negative emotion, then no.
In order to truly experience happiness, you will need a counterpoint. Happiness and sadness go hand in hand. They are two sides of the same coin.
“Happiness cannot truly exist independently.” Samuel Kronen
How will you know if you are happy if you do not experience sadness or sorrow?
Embrace your Emotions, Positive or Negative
Many of us have been taught that we need to be happy or positive at all times. But, constantly trying to be happy ALL THE TIME can be stressful and tedious.
“I embrace now—this moment—with my whole being.” Amy Leigh Mercree
Ironically, it can also make us unhappier.
Humans were gifted with emotions, so why don’t we just allow ourselves to feel?
There is nothing wrong being sad, angry, frustrated, or any other negative emotion. These are normal human reactions to everyday things. It is a part of life. It is part of being alive.
“It’s impossible to make your eyes twinkle if you aren’t feeling twinkly yourself” Roald Dahl
So if you keep fighting against everything instead of just powering through whatever situation you are in, you’ll only end up fatigued.
Just Be
Don’t force happiness when you are not happy. Instead, adopt a positive mindset and allow yourself to just be.
“If only we’d stop trying to be happy, we could have a pretty good time.” – Edith Wharton
Think of it this way: It doesn’t matter if you are sad now or if you are in a situation where it seems impossible to happy, it’s fine. Allow yourself to be present in the situation you are in. Trust the universe.
Believe that no matter what the outcome, in the end, everything will be okay.
Happiness, sadness, anger, frustration, excitement, and every other emotion are part of the ebb and flow of life. Power through the sad moments and treasure the happy ones.
Speaking of trusting the universe…
