What To Do When You’re in a Creative Standstill

For some of us who need creativity more than others, i.e. those whose work is based on what the figments of our imagination can come up with, being in a creative slump could cause serious trouble.

We can’t help but have chores and tasks that are routine. On some level, they help us stay creative by not spending our brain cells on things that we can automatically perform, leaving us more to expend for other pursuits.

But when we sit down and attempt to do what we set out to do, sometimes we hit a wall. And there’s no saying when that wall will come tumbling down.

Artists have a trickier disposition, a more difficult process. They really need to feel inspired or to at least feel free to create. They aren’t the type of people who like to be told exactly what to do, but they do appreciate being given some direction.

But no matter how stern the direction is, creative types will still find themselves hitting obstacles from time to time.

There are a few things that can help get your creative mind unstuck. Here are some of them:

Change location

Because we need our brains to be stimulated to be able to create something, being in the same place day in and day out will hinder our minds to imagine or to recall ideas.

It doesn’t help if you’re stuck in an office, or worse, a cubicle, staring at actual walls with nothing new to trigger anything creative out of thin air.

When you find yourself in this situation, you should immediately get up and walk around the office. Find a new spot, if only temporarily, where you can watch people passing by, watch different things being done, etc.

It doesn’t even have to be outside your office or your building if that’s not feasible. Maybe you can set up in a conference room or maybe even your pantry if you need to listen to some informal chatter to get your mind going.

If it’s possible to actually set foot outside your office, then a park bench would actually be a really good spot because you’ll see all kinds of people and all sorts of things from there.

The point is, move. Don’t stay physically stuck.

Open a magazine

There are all sorts of things you can see in magazines, whether online or actual ones. You never know what’s going to trigger your creative impulses and a magazine holds so many visual cues.

A story, a picture, an illustration—these can all trigger ideas in your brain. They don’t have to be identical to what you see, but they will provide the foundation or the root for your own ideas to branch out from.

You’ll never know what will give you your next awesome concept.

It doesn’t even have to be a magazine that you usually read. It’s even better if it’s something totally new, something out of the ordinary.

Something that will jolt you out of your stupor.

Exercise

No, we’re not talking about physical exercise here, although that could actually help too. Right now, we’re talking about creative exercises that can loosen up your mind.

The internet is a gold mine for finding small creative exercises you can do every day.

If you’re a writer, there are also books available in bookstores that give you a page-a-day activity that will stimulate your ideas.

The exercises range from drawing, finishing a doodle, writing a paragraph, to tearing out pages, making a mess on the book, etc.

There are all sorts of fun, out of the box suggestions available out there in the market. It would be good for you to explore this.

Converse

Our parents told us not to talk to strangers, but when you’re sitting in a coffee shop by yourself, or sitting on a bus or train, it helps to pass the time or to feel more at ease when you talk to somebody, even for just the duration of your trip/stay.

I find that this works well to jog your creativity too.

Talking to people is a skill. Listening to their stories is also a human muscle we need to practice. When you talk to people you don’t know, you’ll have to get out of your comfort zone in order to reach them.

A new set of stories also does wonders for the mind. You become privy to new information, to new angles, to new situations. It can be a cave of wonders for the writer’s soul.

Use that to open your mind and unlock new material.
