4 Things To Avoid To Be More Productive

We often mistake busy-ness with productivity, but it’s actually two very different things. Just because you don’t seem to have a minute to spare doesn’t mean you’re making use of your time wisely.

Sometimes when we work, we can get easily distracted, and what started out as a harmless deviation ends up eating away at our productive hours.

What we need is really to develop discipline, a way of monitoring ourselves that doesn’t make us feel like we’re under surveillance and more of a checks and balances sort of thing.

If you’re the type of person that gets distracted easily, here are some tips that will help you avoid being unproductive.

1. Packing your schedule

Some people feel more valuable, more in demand, and more productive when they pack their day with activities that range from meetings to dinners. But when you really look into it, are you achieving as much as you think you are?

The answer is you probably are getting a lot of things done, but that doesn’t translate to getting things done right.

When you’re always preoccupied and you don’t leave room to breathe or to gather your thoughts, you risk missing out on something because you’re too busy trying to get to the next thing.

2. Surfing the internet

When your job requires you to be on the computer most of the time, especially if it involves being online or being on social media platforms, it’s very easy to stray from your main objectives.

The lure of social media alone is hard to resist. A couple of cute videos and next thing you know, you’re way too deep into the belly of the black hole.

It would be good if you have a post-it of your to-dos on the internet posted right on your monitor so that you always get a glimpse of what you’re supposed to be doing, and hopefully, you snap yourself out of your temporary addiction.

3. Deviating from your schedule

First of all, if you don’t have a fixed schedule, you should make one, along with your to-do list and your calendar of activities.

It’s easy to lose track of time, especially when you have a lot of things on your mind that’s why it makes it easier for you when you have it all written down on a piece of paper.

It de-clutters your mind so that you can actually think about the process of doing your task instead of being overrun by all the tasks you’re listing down in your head.

If you deviate from your schedule, chances are, you’ll get lost trying to gain back your momentum or to find your balance again.

When you keep a schedule of your day/week, you have a visual of how your day will go, and if you follow it as you intended, it will leave you time at the end of the day to relax.

4. Multitasking

People think that juggling a lot of balls in the air makes you an efficient person, but it doesn’t hold true for most. No matter how good you think you are at balancing your acts, you’re bound to drop the ball sometimes.

When you start multiple tasks at once, your focus is spread across all of them. While it gives you the illusion that you’re staying on top of things, you actually don’t see each task clearly.

You need to learn how to focus on one task and do it well. The quality of your output relies on how well you concentrate. If your concentration is divided into several things, you’ll tend to come out with mediocre jobs for all of them.

Remember, quality rules over quantity. People will be impressed more by accuracy rather than speed.
