How to Trick Yourself into Thinking Positively
There are people who naturally gravitate toward the negative side of things. The type of people who, when shown a blank sheet of paper will immediately spot the slight blemish on the lower right portion.
When you tell them the good news, like a job promotion, they will immediately think about the cons instead of the pros that come with it.
When you propose going on a trip, it will likely say it’s a bad time to go because of work, the weather, or finances.
While this could get annoying, especially if it’s your partner or your parent that does this to you, it could work to your advantage.
Here are some of the things you could learn from having people like this in your life.
#1. Learn to listen
The best match for dreamers is the realists, a.k.a. The Annoying Naysayers described above. Dreamers are not usually practical or grounded in reality. They let their imagination drive their decisions, oftentimes ignoring the yield signs that accompany their journey.
The dreamers need the realists because they are too emotionally involved in their pursuits that it creates a blinder for them. All they see is reaching their goals and what it would be like when they get there. Realists will look at the peripherals, the road dreamers will have to walk to get to their dreams.
Learn to listen to their warnings because you probably only see the big picture. You wouldn’t want to be caught off guard by the details you didn’t see coming.
#2. Use it to reinforce your belief
When people air out their opinions, specifically opinions that contradict you or your principles, you’ll tend to get defensive and sensitive about your stand.
You’ll start to feel bad about how different they are from you, and at some point, it will lead you to question yourself. That could be a good thing. Being able to see things from another angle can either help you or hurt you.
Instead of thinking that they’re out to change your beliefs or to hurt your feelings, think of it as a way for you to reinforce what you believe in. Your goal is not to change their minds as well, it’s just for yourself.
If you can hold on to your convictions in the face of adversity and attack, then that’s something that should comfort you. It’s not very common to be able to do that, so that says a lot about you as a person.
#3. Fuel your determination
When people tell you that you can’t do something, it’s either you tell them they’re right or you prove to them how wrong they are.
The latter is always the comeback that you want.
Few things are more satisfying than sticking it to people who push you down and make you feel inadequate.
So rather than giving them the satisfaction of seeing you disheartened, use it to fuel your passion to succeed. Don’t let them get the last say.
Let your success speak volumes.
