5 Strengths Perceived as Weaknesses

Life is filled with mysteries, opposites, paradoxes, and ironies. Sometimes we don’t fully understand certain things that come to light. We don’t always understand people’s choices and their definition of concepts like love, success, a simple life.

The norm dictates too many things to be standard, but the fact is, a lot of life can’t be summed up as being below or above, right or wrong. As the years pass and as people evolve, cultures, the gray area seems to widen, and that’s okay.

Instead of deeming something as out of the ordinary (in a bad way), maybe we should start to see things as a different normal.

Humans are complex beings, and as such shouldn’t be confined to boxed dictations but instead be celebrated for the individuality that each of us bring to the world.

Below are some misconceptions that could stand to be corrected:

#1. Failing

When people don’t do well, when they have been fired from a job, removed from a project, dumped by a boyfriend or girlfriend, or gone bankrupt, the first thing people think is that this person has failed.

Okay, one, if you were fired from a job that you didn’t know how to do well because you didn’t like what the job entailed, getting fired could be one of the best things that could happen to you. Same goes for being dumped by a significant other for not putting up with things you didn’t deserve or failing at your first business to learn how to do better next time.

Failing multiple times in life doesn’t mean you’re weak or that you’re stupid. Not necessarily. It actually means you’re resilient and that you’re brave enough to keep trying.

#2. Following intuition

Some people scoff at those who choose to go with intuition rather than logic. Well, we’ve all probably been in situations wherein we can’t explain something, but we just know, in our guts, that the right thing to do is not exactly logical.

There’s nothing wrong with following that instinct. Even though we are human beings, more evolved than animals, that doesn’t necessarily take out the element of instinct in us. It just means that we have the ability to think, to absorb rational thoughts and ideas, but it doesn’t mean we can’t or shouldn’t take our bestial qualities with us as well.

#3. Being liberated

Freedom is one of those abstract concepts that everyone is entitled to define by their own standards. Sometimes when someone’s ideas of preconceived notions are too radical, they are deemed too liberated, being out of touch with one’s morals, etc.

Morality is a tricky thing, and sits in the gray area. Who are we to judge people for seeing things differently? For living life differently? What’s moral to some is not moral to others.

#4. Indecisiveness

Not being able to stay long in one job or wanting to do a lot of other things is not necessarily a bad thing.

This branding often affects the artists who refuse to do just one thing for a long time or the free spirits that don’t hold down corporate jobs like the rest of society.

Being indecisive can be a mark of an inquisitive mind, one that is ready to take risks, to go on adventures, to redefine life as people know it.

It takes true courage to work without a safety blanket. While some people find it irresponsible, others deem it bold.

#5. Having fun

Yes, life is a serious matter. After all, many people are fighting just to stay alive.

But if you ask those who are fighting, “What would you do with a second chance at life?” I am willing to bet it’s not to invest more money in stocks or to spend more time in the classrooms, hearing lectures, or watch more news about the war in different parts of the world.

Most of them would probably say things like spend more time with friends, laugh more with loved ones, take the trips they didn’t take because they wanted to save more, to follow their hearts instead of their minds on more than one occasion.

The seriousness of it is that people need to seriously assess what is important in life, and it’s none of the material things that corrupt us. Fun is the essence of life.
The sooner we all accept the fact that we are different from each other and the sooner we actually accept those differences, the closer we’ll be to happier lives.

Not all of us want the same things anymore, and we shouldn’t have to feel weird or apologetic for that.

To bring in more good energy into the world, we need to start operating on that premise.
