How to Avoid Procrastination
In today’s digital atmosphere, it’s so easy to lose attention spans. There’s too much distraction surrounding us–in bus stops, in our cars, at work.
It’s not that realistic anymore to seclude yourself and avoid the factors that could take your focus off of what you need to do.
What’s really needed here is the discipline.
Temptation is not going to stop coming at you. The closer your deadline is, the stronger the temptation is to let loose and take a break, or start a new task, etc. But you need to remember your end goal.
You don’t need to set your eyes on the prize, but you need to keep your head in the game at least.
When you’re having trouble getting started on something, remember these 3 things:
20-min goals
Long term goals are important. They make you see what’s ahead and let’s you build the steps to get there.
But if you’re having a tough time actually taking the steps, you need to break down your tasks in smaller increments.
You need short-term goals.
Practice this daily by making a list of tasks you need to do and time yourself to do them for only 20 mins. Even breaks need to be timed and quantified because you don’t want to take frequent and extended breaks that will affect your momentum.
Breaking down your task will keep you focused even if you’re doing different tasks because there’s a satisfaction that comes with ticking off things on your list.
Learn the magic of ‘No’
Don’t be a people-pleaser all the time. One of the most important words you’ll need to learn in life is to say ‘no’.
Why? Because you need to keep your sanity.
If you say yes to every project that comes along, pretty soon, you’re going to find yourself burnt out and discouraged from reaching your goals.
You need to be able to take care of yourself first. You’ll wear yourself down if you keep putting other people before you.
Stop scrolling
With every click of a button you go deeper into something and you forget what you started out to do.
It’s not that you shouldn’t allow yourself to explore or your mind wander when it wants to. A little diversion can sometimes serve your creativity well.
You can’t totally avoid going online nowadays, especially since most businesses operate on a certain ‘social’ level.
You just need to catch yourself before you go too far.
The discipline is really what you have to work on. If you learn how to control yourself, then you don’t have to completely avoid temptation. Just work around it.
