CAUTION: 5 Things to Consider Before Posting on Social Media

Word vomit usually works against you.

It turns friends into enemies, or at the very least turns them into (un)followers.

There’s really no good thing that comes from ranting on your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or anywhere else. It just puts a bulls eye on your profile for your friends to deliberate whether to cut you out from their life or not.

If you’re looking to become a better person and sharpen your skills at being virtuous, you need to start practicing how to behave on social media because this is as social as socializing gets these days.

If you can’t behave here, you won’t get invited to actual events. So conduct your business wisely.

Here are some things to consider before posting on Social Media:

#1. Be diplomatic

Stay away from political and religious messages as much as possible. Any rookie at life will make the mistake of broadcasting their personal opinions and feelings about these two very controversial topics.

Admittedly, it’s hard not to get emotional when you feel like your personal beliefs are being attacked, but unless you’re being attacked personally and not just by principal, HOLD YOUR TONGUE (or fingers for that matter).

Actually, even personal attacks shouldn’t be discussed publicly on any platform. Keep in mind that that you have a lot of friends and family who probably have opposing views.

So if you want to keep the peace, you’ll be as diplomatic as you can be, maybe even going past your comfort zone in diplomacy.

#2. Stop the negativity

It can be quite dampening when the first thing you see on your feed is some bad news or some angry rant about whatever.

If you’re looking to be more positive in your life, and you want to attract good vibes, you need to stay away from anything that pulls you into a black hole.

So it follows that you should be an agent of positive thinking in the cesspool of hatred, anger, and pain that inevitably surrounds life.

You should be at the forefront of the battle, fighting every injustice and discrimination with hope and love.

3. Other people have bigger problems

Keep in mind that everyone is definitely fighting battles that you’re not privy to, and those battles could be life-altering to them.

Yet they choose to deal with them silently.

On the other hand, there’s you, ranting about the traffic in your locale, that your cappuccino wasn’t as foamy as it should’ve been, or that your smartphone’s battery doesn’t last you the whole day.

Fighting moronic drivers on the road is not the same as someone fighting Cancer.

Put things in perspective.

#4. Harmless is relative

What you might think as funny or neutral doesn’t mean everybody else will find it so.

Remember that people are different.

People’s degrees of sensitivity vary and you can’t dictate to anyone to be comfortable with the same things you’re comfortably with.

Be considerate of others. If you’re in doubt whether or not something might be offensive, it’s better to err on the side of safety.

Just because you think something’s harmless doesn’t mean that it is for others.

Before you play the “it’s my wall and my right to say what I want” card, ask yourself if what you want to post is worth offending someone.

#5.Post to please

While you may feel like your wall is a platform to air out your personal things, it’s really not.

While it has branched out to being that, the point of social media is initially really to connect to people, both strangers and old friends, to share things with them that bring you closer, to relay news and be informed with what’s happening around you.

Of course those things beg for reactions and it has given birth to misuse of the platform, but if you really think about it, social media was born out of the need to connect with humanity.

Being so, you should only post things that bring everyone closer together, not potentially hurt anyone.

Keep these in mind the next time you’re typing away at that status box.
