How To Make Life More Meaningful

Being busy seems to be everyone’s ‘thing’ nowadays. But the glorification of busy should really stop.

For one thing, it promotes the idea that if you’re not busy with something, specifically your career, you’re wasting time, or busy people have it all, or that they’re more productive than everyone else.

That’s just not accurate at all.

What we need to remember is how to live a meaningful life. Work is just an aspect of that. There are other things we must remember to keep our life in check.

We’ve listed a few things that will remind you what else you need to be considering.

#1. Self-awareness

You may know the latest trends, fashion, and technology, but can you honestly say you know yourself inside and out?

What is your passion? What is your life purpose? Are you living according to your standards?

If you’re not able to answer these questions, but you know, say, the latest app in productivity, I’d say you’re not focusing enough on yourself.

And that’s a disaster waiting to happen.

#2. Relationships

It can’t be stressed enough how important it is to spend quality time with loved ones.

Time spent away from them is a time you’re never getting back, but so is being around but not really present in the moment.

Just because you’re at home, working on your desk while your toddler is watching TV in the living room doesn’t mean you’re spending quality time with them.

That is working (albeit, it’s a privilege on its own to be able to do that).

Quality time is being able to share the moment with the people around you, experiencing it fully with them. If your attention is divided, it doesn’t count.

#3. Experiences, not things

Spend on experiences more than material things.

People tend to validate their wealth by amassing so many things they don’t really need without realizing nobody really cares about those things, and those who do care might not be worthy people to keep in your life anyway.

Spend on things that will open your eyes to different cultures, ideas, and realities.

Travel is one of the best things you can ‘invest’ in! It doesn’t have to be somewhere expensive or somewhere far.

It just has to be somewhere you’ve never been and offers you something enriching in your life.

#4. Charity

Before you argue that you’re not on the affluent side of the economy, charity doesn’t just refer to financial aid.

When was the last time you helped somebody without asking or expecting anything in return?

Charities don’t always need you to donate money. Some of them ask for your time or talent, and if you have any to spare, it’s always a good idea to devote it to a cause.

Being compassionate to your neighbors is its own reward.

#5. Simplify

What do you really need in life? What do you really want?

Most times, we get stressed by concerning ourselves with things that don’t really add anything to our lives. If anything, they tend to take away some of the ones that actually matter.

For example, do you really love your job? Is it worth the X amount of time you spend away from your family?

Does it make it possible for you to live your life the way you want to or does it provide for a grandiose lifestyle that people expect you to have but isn’t really your cup of tea?

That’s why it’s important for you to be self-aware—so you know where to trim the fat.

Simplifying your life doesn’t mean living with only the bare minimum (unless that’s what you want).

Simplifying means that everything you do serves your main purpose, without the extravagances that you can actually do without.

Simple living changes the definition from person to person, but it boils down to living a life that’s honest to what you want.

Think about it, wouldn’t you rather work on something you’re passionate about that gives you enough time with family, friends, significant other—or a job where you slave away 80 hours a week, for a yacht you probably don’t take out of the harbor or that sports car you only drive on weekends?

A simple life lessens the things you worry about, the things you stress yourself with.

Your life is yours to define. Make it meaningful.
