How to Pursue Your Passion
A lot of us delude ourselves into thinking we’re “too busy” for any creative pursuits.
We apparently have no time to read a book, to doodle, to do some arts and crafts. Since it can be placed under the hobby category, it’s not that worthwhile to make time for it.
So we work. We go through all our tasks, our chores, our never ending to do lists.
We do everything else we’re supposed to do because that’s the pragmatic thing to do. Those are the things that will yield income and will impact more people around us.
But our lives are not just about those things. How about the impact we’re making on ourselves?
It doesn’t have to be your career for it to do something for you. It doesn’t have to benefit you financially for it to be ‘lucrative’. Pursuing a passion doesn’t mean foregoing your obligations. But they are equal to them.
There are some things in life that you just have to do just because–just because you want to, and just because you can. So feed your soul.
Where and how do you start? Here:
#1. Remove your fear
Don’t be afraid if you know nothing about the thing you want to pursue. Everybody starts as a beginner. You just need to start with an interest in it then work your way up, sideways, over and around.
Learn everything you possibly can over time.
It’s not something that you can get altogether right away, but something that you’ll gradually gather in grains.
It’s okay to look like a novice because you are. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, even those that sound silly.
It’s always sillier not to ask something that’s unclear to you.
#2. Expect that ‘fun’ will also be hard work
You might think that taking up a hobby or pursuing a passion should be effortless, something that fills up your soul completely and therefore does not resemble much of your actual efforts at work.
But you’re going to be disappointed if that’s what you think.
Even fun needs to have effort put in. If you want to be good at photography, you need to clock in the hours, the experience, in order to get better at it.
The same goes for other creative activities. It also takes discipline to develop.
#3. Take classes
Don’t be embarrassed about taking workshops or classes to further your knowledge.
What does it matter if you look like the oldest in your class? Everyone has to start, and it just took you a while to get there.
Enrolling yourself in classes will help get you on track. There may be things about your hobby that you’re not aware of, and this way, you have starter buddies to lean on as well as a mentor you can ask.
Removing obstacles in your way includes removing the uncertainties.
#4. Keep looking for inspiration
It is literally EVERYWHERE.
You can’t go on Facebook and not get your interests piqued, or get motivated by all the art you see, or to go get your coffee and not feel inspired by your surroundings.
Different things will hit you from time to time. Use that inspiration to fuel your creativity.
Stop waiting to start. Start making, start doing.
