3 Reasons Why You Should Set Boundaries
While some people might think it’s rude or snobbish to set boundaries, it’s actually not, if you understand it.
Life can be messy, hectic, and exciting.
It’s filled with a lot of people, people who want something from you, people who want to spend time with you, people who need you, people you need something from, and the list goes on.
In between all these people are events, events you need to attend, events you want to attend, and events that are happening around you.
If you’re the type of person who says yes to everything and to everyone, while it may seem like you’re being accommodating and pleasing, pretty soon you’ll find yourself exhausted and cranky.
Still not convinced you need boundaries?
Here are some reasons why you really should:
Respect
A lot of people complain that they are not being treated with the respect they deserve, most notable in the work place. Their positions are not acknowledged and taken seriously by their peers and subordinates.
You want to know why that might be the case? Because you make yourself too flexible.
If people now that they can bend you towards their will, even the nicest ones can take advantage of this.
If you want your deadlines taken seriously, your limitations to be considered, your voice to be heard, you need to make yourself a force to be reckoned with.
You need to have authority over yourself so that you can enforce the same authority with others.
Preservation
Learning to say ‘no’ is a skill that most adults eventually learn. But if you can learn it faster and understand the benefits that it can bring to your life earlier, it’s all the better.
Why say ‘no’?
Because you can.
Yes, that’s right, you can. And you should.
People pleasing can only go so far.
In the end, you can’t please everyone, even the ones you do wish you had done it in a more specific manner, and most people you can’t please anyway.
Saying ‘at least you tried’ doesn’t have that much bearing in the grand scheme of things.
People have their own minds. They will think what they want to think, regardless of what you try to prove to them.
If you’re just doing what you’re doing for others all the time, what gets left behind for you?
You can’t exert all your effort towards other people. You need to exert effort into helping yourself.
More
Less clutter, less worry, more life.
Realizing you have the power to refuse things, and people, that don’t add anything but anxiety and stress in your life is one of the greatest lessons you can teach yourself.
In order to have more space in your life for what really matters to you, you need to unclog it with the things that other people put in there that you can’t use.
Sure, it’s hard to say no to people, especially those close to you. But you need to make them see that it’s your life, and you want to live it a certain way.
If it’s different from an idea in their heads, then sorry, not sorry.
Respect yourself, dictate the value of your life, and hopefully other people will follow suit.
